Chinese New Year (February 16th)
Learn more about Chinese New Year and celebrate this month!
“Chinese New Year celebrations were born out of fear and myth. Legend spoke of the wild beast Nien (which also is the word for “year”) that appeared at the end of each year, attacking and killing villagers. Loud noises and bright lights were used to scare the beast away, and the Chinese New Year celebrations were born. Today, the 15-day New Year festivities are celebrated with a week of vacation in metropolitan areas of China. Much like the Western New Year (January 1st), the biggest celebration is on the eve of the holiday. At the turn of the new year, firework displays are put on throughout the city.”
To celebrate this holiday, visit Talin Market to get all the ingredients and supplies you need. Talin Market is an authentic and international market. It’s about a 12-minute drive from Valley View Villas. Happy Chinese New Year!
Pistachio Day (February 26th)
Celebrate Pistachio Day by making these delicious Cranberry Pistachio Biscotti from Shugary Sweet. Guests and loved ones are sure to love it! Gather up these ingredients to get started: unsalted butter, granulated sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, all-purpose flour, baking powder, dried cranberries, shelled pistachios, and white chocolate candy coating.
Are you planning to see Every Day? Check it out at your local theater beginning Friday, February 23rd. “Every Day tells the story of Rhiannon (Angourie Rice), a 16-year old girl who falls in love with a mysterious spirit named "A" who inhabits a different body every day. Feeling an unmatched connection, Rhiannon and A work each day to find each other, not knowing what or who the next day will bring. The more the two fall in love, the more the realities of loving someone who is a different person every 24 hours takes a toll, leaving Rhiannon and "A" to face the hardest decision either has ever had to make.” We think you'll really enjoy Every Day. Buy your tickets today!
We suggest going to see Peter Rabbit this month. It comes out in theaters on Friday, February 9th. "Peter Rabbit, the mischievous and adventurous hero who has captivated generations of readers, now takes on the starring role of his own irreverent, contemporary comedy with attitude. In the film, Peter's feud with Mr. McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson) escalates to greater heights than ever before as they rival for the affections of the warm-hearted animal lover who lives next door (Rose Byrne)." Are you excited to watch Peter Rabbit? Buy your tickets today for a great weekend.
Pachinko by Min Jin Lee (2017)
Read this inspiring novel this month! “Pachinko follows one Korean family through the generations, beginning in early 1900s Korea with Sunja, the prized daughter of a poor yet proud family, whose unplanned pregnancy threatens to shame them all. Deserted by her lover, Sunja is saved when a young tubercular minister offers to marry and bring her to Japan.”
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith (1943)
A classic novel, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, is a must-read! “The story of young, sensitive, and idealistic Francie Nolan and her bittersweet formative years in the slums of Williamsburg has enchanted and inspired millions of readers for more than sixty years. By turns overwhelming, sublime, heartbreaking, and uplifting, the daily experiences of the unforgettable Nolans are raw with honesty and tenderly threaded with family connectedness.”
